Last month I read 20 books and 2 pieces of shorter fiction. I listened to an audiobook, too. Obviously, that’s more than I am going to post about all at once, so I’ll start with the easy ones.
The audiobook was the third book in the Demon Wars Saga by R.A. Salvatore, . Each of these books is done in three parts, with 5-6 hours of audio per part, so this constitutes a serious investment of time. But they are worth it. This one didn’t end the way I would have liked – or any way that I might have been able to tolerate, but my son was quick to point out that Salvatore is not known for his happy endings. The story was wonderful and the audio production flawless. (They are done by Graphic Audio. Unfortunately, they are no longer available from them. I got mine as part of a Humble Bundle.) I still have a lot of this series to go, but I will definitely be reading Salvatore after I am done with these. Unfortunately, his ebooks are as expensive as paperbacks, so I will probably just try to dig out my son’s old copies. They are around here somewhere!
I read two pieces of short fiction: Robinair cooltech 700 repair manual download.
- Vampire Dead-tective #1 by Mac Flynn
- A Gift of Shadow by Nick Webb
I know that I do not really enjoy short stories very much because they are short and it is hard to write good ones, but these were a little longer than short stories and I had hopes. But I was disappointed. Vampire Dead-tective #1had an interesting premise: a bond between a human and a vampire as long as the human is wearing a ring. I didn’t like the characters very much, and that made it difficult to get into the story. Maybe the other installments (There are 5; this one was 83 pages, so all together they are a longish novel.) would change that for me, but I am not counting on it. Also, the writing was filled with cliches. It seemed like laziness more than a conscious decision to include them. This book was OK since it was free on Amazon, but I won’t shell out $2.99 for any of the other installments.
A Gift of Shadows was part of a 15 book set I got through Kobo that is no longer available. I cannot find any evidence of Nick Webb writing a series that this would fit into. The story was good but too short. I assumed it was like a prologue to a series, so I was OK with that. But now that I can’t find the series, I am a little disappointed. I found The Maskmaker’s Apprentice by Endi Webb (who looks just like Nick Webb!), and so I guess that is what is leads into.
I read three historical novels:
- Adventures of Cash Laramie and Gideon Miles, Vol. IIby Edward A. Grainger
- The Good Knight by Sarah Woodbury
- Soldier’s Heart by Michele McKnight Baker
I didn’t like this Cash Laramie as much as the first one I read, but it was still good. I really liked the interplay between Laramie and Miles in the first one, and this book didn’t feature Miles nearly as much.
The Good Knight was a “Medieval Mystery” that kept me interested and taught me a lot about the times. I really enjoyed it. The mystery was good, and the characters were engaging. I hope to read more of this series.
I read Soldier’s Heart by Gary Paulsen some years ago, and at first that was a problem for me with this book. But this Soldier’s Heart is every bit as good in its own way. I struggled with the connection between soldier’s heart and this story for a long time because the book is more about the families of the soldiers than the soldiers themselves. But the families became people I cared about. The story is based on fact and written by a descendant of the families in question, so that makes it even more interesting to me. If you like Civil War stories that aren’t all about the killing, this is the book for you!
OK… That’s all for now. I’ll be back later with more!
In this book, the final book of the trilogy, The Demon Apostle, Elbryan, also known as The Nightbird heads north along with Bradwarden and Juravial. They are tasked with taking back the Timberlands from the remaining monsters. Jilseponie has been drastically changed by the death of her adopted parents. She has a lot of built up anger and tends to take it out in fighting the various bands of evil creatures.
Pony has also found out that she is pregnant. Although Juravial encourages her to tell Elbryan, she refuses to until the Timberlands have been cleared. She doesn’t want Elbryan to be distracted in his work. It is for this reason that she decides to move south to the city of Palmaris until the spring. She does this mostly on the premise of trying to find out what has happened to Roger Lockless who hasn't been seen since the death of Baron Bilderbough.
Once again I was treated to a Graphic Audio performance that really brings you into the story. The combination of sound effects and artistic vocal performances creates what Graphic Audio calls a “Movie in your Mind” and that is truly what The DemonWars Saga: The Demon Apostle – Part I is.
Through his use of forbidden magic, Father Abbot Markwart has gained the power to transport himself to other locations. Over time this power has grown, and he can interact with the people there. He has begun to do this with Abbott De'Unnero at the abbey of Saint Precious quite a bit lately in an effort to help control the fight for power between the church and state.
While Markwart tolerates it somewhat, he is finding that De`Unnero seems to have become a little too assured of himself and trying to take his own control of the situation. With the death of the Baron, using some contrived emergency tactics, De`Unnero positions himself to become a Bishop. This is a title covering both church and state which means he has power over both.

The Abbot's right hand man, Brother Francis, is beginning to question some of the actions of Markwart as well as some of his own past actions. Add to that, Markwart is also beginning to change physically as well which is beginning to un-nerve some of the monks at St.Mere-Abelle.

In an effort to find Pony and the missing gemstones, the church, through Abbott De'Unnero, has issued an edict that all gemstones must be returned to the church. The church has sent guards in Palmaris out to find the stones as well as any friends of Avelyn Despris.
Brother Braumin has begun to instruct his followers in the ways of Avelyn and the teachings of the original Abellican church. He also begins telling them the stories of the trip to the island where the magic stones are collected. This is something that is forbidden to talk about, especially to younger monks, and something that could quickly get him burned at the stake.

The Demon Apostle has us asking what will happen to Pony in her search for Roger? Will Markwart and De`Unnero have a falling out? Will Markwart's power become too strong for even him to handle? Will Brother Francis' conscience become stronger than his support for Markwart? And will Brother Braumin be found as a heretic and be burned at the stake like his mentor Brother Jojonah was, snuffing out any hope for the Abellican church to regain its honor?
The quality of the story and performance are the reason that keeps me coming back to Graphic Audio products. By using a whole cast; over 20 performers, you don't get one person trying to sound like many different voices, you get unique individual characters. It is this that makes it great.
